Indication
Treatment of epilepsy, excluding petit mal seizures.
Ingredients
- Phenobarbital (Phénobarbital) 100 mg
Direction
Adults: 2–3 mg/kg/day orally. Children: <20 kg: 5 mg/kg/day; 20–30 kg: 3–4 mg/kg/day; >30 kg: 2–3 mg/kg/day. As directed by physician.
Side effects
- Drowsiness
- Cognitive impairment
- Ataxia
- Paradoxical excitement in children
- Dependence with prolonged use
Precautions
- Controlled substance — prescription required
- Risk of dependence and withdrawal seizures on abrupt discontinuation
- Do not stop treatment suddenly
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic or respiratory impairment
- Avoid alcohol
- May impair ability to drive
