Indication

Combination antibiotic (co-trimoxazole) for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections, including: urinary tract infections, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, otitis media, traveller's diarrhoea, shigellosis, and treatment / prophylaxis of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) in immunocompromised patients.

Ingredients
  • Sulfaméthoxazole 800 mg
  • Triméthoprime 160 mg
Direction

Adults: take 1 tablet (960 mg) twice daily, every 12 hours, with food or water. For severe infections the dose may be increased as prescribed. Duration as directed by the doctor. Drink plenty of fluids during the course. Use only as prescribed by a doctor.

Side effects
  • Common: nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • skin rash.
  • Less common: photosensitivity
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • oral candidiasis.
  • Rare but serious: severe skin reactions (Stevens
  • Johnson syndrome
  • toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • blood dyscrasias (agranulocytosis
  • aplastic anaemia
  • thrombocytopenia)
  • severe allergic reactions
  • hyperkalaemia
  • hepatotoxicity
  • renal impairment.
  • Seek immediate medical attention for severe rash
  • fever
  • sore throat
  • mouth ulcers
  • unusual bruising or bleeding
  • jaundice
  • or signs of an allergic reaction.
Precautions
  • Prescription
  • only antibiotic — use only under medical supervision.
  • Do not use in known hypersensitivity to sulphonamides
  • trimethoprim or co
  • trimoxazole
  • severe hepatic or renal impairment
  • blood dyscrasias
  • megaloblastic anaemia due to folate deficiency
  • glucose
  • 6
  • phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
  • infants under 6 weeks (except for PCP)
  • or pregnancy (especially near term).
  • Drink adequate fluids during treatment to reduce risk of crystalluria.
  • Monitor full blood count and renal function in prolonged therapy or in patients with risk factors.
  • Inform your doctor of all other medications — co
  • trimoxazole interacts with warfarin
  • methotrexate
  • sulfonylureas
  • ACE inhibitors
  • potassium supplements and others.
