Augmentin 1 g

Indication

Augmentin 1 g is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combining amoxicillin (a penicillin) with clavulanic acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). It is indicated for treatment of bacterial infections including sinusitis, otitis media, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections.

Ingredients

• Amoxicillin 875 mg
• Clavulanic acid 125 mg

Direction

Adults and children over 40 kg: 1 tablet (875 mg/125 mg) twice daily for 5–14 days depending on the indication. Take at the start of a meal to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Complete the full course of treatment.

Side effects

• Diarrhoea (very common).
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Skin rash.
• Candidiasis (oral or vaginal).
• Elevated liver enzymes (usually reversible).
• Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (rare but serious).

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity or prior Augmentin
• associated jaundice.
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose reduction may be required).
• Risk of Clostridium difficile
• associated diarrhoea.
• May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
• May interact with warfarin and methotrexate.
• Do not use for viral infections (e.g.
• cold
• flu).
