NANDIAZINE Sulfadiazine 500 mg

Indication

NANDIAZINE contains sulfadiazine, a sulphonamide antibiotic. It is used for treatment of urinary tract infections, toxoplasmosis (in combination with pyrimethamine), nocardiosis, and as prophylaxis for rheumatic fever.

Ingredients

• Sulfadiazine 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 2–4 g initially, followed by 1 g every 4–6 hours. For toxoplasmosis: 1–1.5 g 4 times daily in combination with pyrimethamine and folinic acid. Maintain adequate fluid intake (at least 1.5 litres/day) to prevent crystalluria.

Side effects

• Nausea and vomiting.
• Skin rash and photosensitivity.
• Crystalluria and urinary tract complications.
• Haematological effects (anaemia
• leucopenia).
• Serious skin reactions (rare but serious).
• Elevated liver enzymes.

Precautions

• Maintain high fluid intake to prevent crystalluria and kidney stones.
• Contraindicated in patients with sulphonamide hypersensitivity.
• Risk of serious skin reactions (Stevens
• Johnson syndrome)
• discontinue at first sign of rash.
• Use with caution in hepatic or renal impairment.
• Not recommended in pregnancy (especially near term) or neonates.
• May interact with warfarin and sulfonylureas.
