Indication
NANDIAZINE contains sulfadiazine, a sulphonamide antibiotic. It is used for treatment of urinary tract infections, toxoplasmosis (in combination with pyrimethamine), nocardiosis, and as prophylaxis for rheumatic fever.
Ingredients
- Sulfadiazine 500 mg
Direction
Adults: 2–4 g initially, followed by 1 g every 4–6 hours. For toxoplasmosis: 1–1.5 g 4 times daily in combination with pyrimethamine and folinic acid. Maintain adequate fluid intake (at least 1.5 litres/day) to prevent crystalluria.
Side effects
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Skin rash and photosensitivity.
- Crystalluria and urinary tract complications.
- Haematological effects (anaemia
- leucopenia).
- Serious skin reactions (rare but serious).
- Elevated liver enzymes.
Precautions
- Maintain high fluid intake to prevent crystalluria and kidney stones.
- Contraindicated in patients with sulphonamide hypersensitivity.
- Risk of serious skin reactions (Stevens
- Johnson syndrome)
- discontinue at first sign of rash.
- Use with caution in hepatic or renal impairment.
- Not recommended in pregnancy (especially near term) or neonates.
- May interact with warfarin and sulfonylureas.
