Indication
Bactrim is a combined antibiotic (co-trimoxazole) used for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (including Pneumocystis pneumonia prophylaxis and treatment), gastrointestinal infections, toxoplasmosis, and various other bacterial infections.
Ingredients
- Sulfamethoxazole 400 mg
- Trimethoprim 80 mg
Direction
Adults: 2 tablets (800 mg sulfamethoxazole + 160 mg trimethoprim) twice daily for 5–14 days. Children: dose based on body weight (approximately 20 mg sulfamethoxazole + 4 mg trimethoprim per kg per dose, twice daily). Take with food and a full glass of water.
Side effects
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Skin rash (including severe reactions).
- Haematological effects (anaemia
- leucopenia) with prolonged use.
- Hyperkalaemia.
- Photosensitivity.
- Increased creatinine.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in sulphonamide or trimethoprim hypersensitivity.
- Contraindicated in severe hepatic or renal failure.
- Risk of serious skin reactions (Stevens
- Johnson syndrome
- TEN) — discontinue at first sign of rash.
- Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
- Monitor blood counts with prolonged use.
- Not recommended in first trimester or near
- term pregnancy.
- May interact with warfarin
- methotrexate
- and phenytoin.
