Indication

Treatment of oedema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease. Treatment of hypertension, alone or in combination with other antihypertensives.

Ingredients

• Furosemide 40 mg

Direction

Adults — Oedema: Initially 40 mg once daily in the morning; may be increased to 80–160 mg daily if needed. Hypertension: 40–80 mg daily, adjusted to response. Doses should be individually tailored. Take preferably in the morning to avoid nocturia.

Side effects

• Hypokalaemia and other electrolyte disturbances.
• Dehydration and hypotension.
• Hyperuricaemia and gout.
• Nausea and diarrhoea.
• Muscle cramps.
• Ototoxicity (high doses).
• Photosensitivity.

Precautions

• Risk of electrolyte imbalances (hypokalaemia
• hyponatraemia
• hypomagnesaemia) — monitor regularly.
• Contraindicated in anuria and severe renal failure.
• Use with caution in hepatic impairment — risk of hepatic encephalopathy.
• Risk of ototoxicity (hearing loss) with high doses or rapid IV administration.
• May precipitate gout.
• Potentiates hypotensive effect of other antihypertensives.
• Keep out of reach of children.
