Indication
Treatment of oedema associated with congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and renal disease. Treatment of hypertension, alone or in combination with other antihypertensives.
Ingredients
- Furosemide 40 mg
Direction
Adults — Oedema: Initially 40 mg once daily in the morning; may be increased to 80–160 mg daily if needed. Hypertension: 40–80 mg daily, adjusted to response. Doses should be individually tailored. Take preferably in the morning to avoid nocturia.
Side effects
- Hypokalaemia and other electrolyte disturbances.
- Dehydration and hypotension.
- Hyperuricaemia and gout.
- Nausea and diarrhoea.
- Muscle cramps.
- Ototoxicity (high doses).
- Photosensitivity.
Precautions
- Risk of electrolyte imbalances (hypokalaemia
- hyponatraemia
- hypomagnesaemia) — monitor regularly.
- Contraindicated in anuria and severe renal failure.
- Use with caution in hepatic impairment — risk of hepatic encephalopathy.
- Risk of ototoxicity (hearing loss) with high doses or rapid IV administration.
- May precipitate gout.
- Potentiates hypotensive effect of other antihypertensives.
- Keep out of reach of children.
