COTRIM P.P.M Sulfamethoxazole 200 mg Trimethoprim 40 mg

Indication

Treatment of susceptible bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumocystis pneumonia), gastrointestinal infections, and skin/soft tissue infections. Used as combination in a 5:1 ratio.

Ingredients

• Sulfamethoxazole 200 mg
• Trimethoprim 40 mg

Direction

Adults: 2 tablets (or 20 mL if syrup equivalent) twice daily for 5–14 days depending on infection type. Children: Dose based on body weight — 6 mg/kg trimethoprim + 30 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole per day in two divided doses. Take with plenty of water.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• and diarrhoea.
• Skin rash.
• Stevens
• Johnson syndrome (rare but serious).
• Haematological effects (leukopenia
• thrombocytopenia).
• Hyperkalaemia.
• Photosensitivity.
• Crystalluria.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with known sulfonamide hypersensitivity.
• Contraindicated in severe hepatic and renal impairment.
• May cause serious skin reactions (Stevens
• Johnson syndrome
• toxic epidermal necrolysis) — discontinue immediately if rash develops.
• Contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy and near term.
• Contraindicated in neonates under 6 weeks.
• Risk of hyperkalaemia — monitor electrolytes in at
• risk patients.
• Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
• Keep out of reach of children.
