Allopurinol is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor used to lower serum uric acid levels. It is used in the long-term management and prevention of gout, hyperuricaemia associated with chemotherapy, and uric acid kidney stones.
Adults: Initially 100 mg once daily after a meal; increase gradually to 200β300 mg daily for mild conditions, or up to 400β600 mg daily for severe conditions. Maintain adequate fluid intake (2β3 litres of water per day). Dose should be adjusted in renal impairment.
