Indication

Ecothrocin (erythromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, syphilis in penicillin-allergic patients), and as an alternative for patients allergic to penicillin.

Ingredients

• Erythromycin 500 mg

Direction

Adults: 250–500 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg–1 g every 12 hours, depending on severity. Take with food to reduce gastric irritation. Complete the full course.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• abdominal cramps
• diarrhoea — very common.
• Thrombophlebitis at injection site (IV route).
• QT prolongation
• ventricular arrhythmias — rare.
• Hepatotoxicity (cholestatic jaundice) — rare.
• Hearing loss with high doses — rare.

Precautions

• Do not use if allergic to macrolide antibiotics.
• Can prolong QT interval — avoid in patients with cardiac risk or taking other QT
• prolonging drugs.
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
• Numerous drug interactions — inform doctor of all medications.
• Keep out of reach of children.
