Augmentin 1g Amoxicillin trihydrate + Potassium clavulanate

Indication

Augmentin 1g is a broad-spectrum beta-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible beta-lactamase-producing organisms, including community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, otitis media, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and intra-abdominal infections.

Ingredients

• Amoxicillin trihydrate 1000 mg (equivalent to Amoxicillin 875 mg)
• Potassium clavulanate 125 mg (equivalent to Clavulanic acid 125 mg)

Direction

Adults and children over 40 kg: 1 tablet (875 mg/125 mg — note: Augmentin 1g tablets contain 875 mg amoxicillin + 125 mg clavulanate) twice daily for 5–14 days depending on indication. Take at the start of a meal to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Complete the full course.

Side effects

• Gastrointestinal: diarrhea
• nausea
• vomiting
• indigestion (common — take with food).
• Skin rash
• urticaria.
• Hypersensitivity including anaphylaxis (rare but serious).
• Cholestatic jaundice
• hepatitis (rare).
• Candidiasis (oral and vaginal) with prolonged use.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins.
• Contraindicated in previous cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with Augmentin.
• Use with caution in renal impairment (dose adjustment required for severe impairment).
• Risk of superinfection (Candida) with prolonged use.
• May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
• Monitor liver function with prolonged use.
• Keep out of reach of children.
