Zyloric 200 Allopurinol 200mg Oral Tablets

Indication

A xanthine oxidase inhibitor used for the long-term management of gout and hyperuricaemia (elevated uric acid levels). Also used in the prevention of uric acid and calcium oxalate renal stones, and to reduce uric acid levels in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Ingredients

• Allopurinol 200 mg

Direction

Adults: Initial dose 100 mg once daily, increasing gradually as needed. Maintenance dose for gout is typically 200–300 mg/day for mild cases, up to 600–900 mg/day for severe cases. Take after food. Drink plenty of fluids (2–3 litres per day). Dosage must be reduced in renal impairment.

Side effects

• Skin rash (common
• may progress to severe reactions — stop immediately)
• Nausea and gastrointestinal disturbance
• Increased acute gout attacks when initiating therapy
• Drowsiness
• Headache
• Elevated liver enzymes (rare)

Precautions

• Do not initiate allopurinol during an acute gout attack
• wait until the attack has resolved.
• Discontinue immediately if a skin rash appears
• serious skin reactions (Stevens
• Johnson syndrome
• toxic epidermal necrolysis) have been reported.
• Patients carrying the HLA
• B*5801 allele (more common in Han Chinese
• Thai
• Korean populations) have a significantly higher risk of severe skin reactions
• genetic screening is recommended before use in these populations.
• Reduce dose in renal or hepatic impairment.
• May interact with azathioprine
• mercaptopurine
• and warfarin
• consult a doctor.
• Adequate fluid intake is essential to prevent renal stones.
• Do not exceed recommended dose without medical supervision.
