Indication

Antibiotic for serious bacterial infections

Ingredients

• Ceftriaxone Sodium USP 1g

Direction

For administration by a healthcare professional only. Adults: usual dose is 1–2 g intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM) once daily, depending on the type and severity of infection. Severe infections may require up to 4 g/day. Children: 50–100 mg/kg/day IV or IM in one or two divided doses. Gonorrhoea: 250 mg IM as a single dose. Reconstitute the vial according to the package insert before administration.

Side effects

• Injection site reactions (pain
• phlebitis with IV administration).
• Gastrointestinal: diarrhoea
• nausea
• vomiting.
• Hypersensitivity reactions: rash
• urticaria
• rarely anaphylaxis.
• Haematological: eosinophilia
• leucopenia
• thrombocytopenia.
• Biliary sludge or gallbladder pseudolithiasis with prolonged use.
• Elevated liver enzymes.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone
• other cephalosporins
• or severe hypersensitivity to penicillins.
• Contraindicated in neonates with hyperbilirubinaemia or those requiring calcium
• containing IV solutions simultaneously.
• Use with caution in patients with history of gastrointestinal disease
• renal or hepatic impairment
• or coagulation disorders.
• May cause superinfection (e.g. Clostridioides difficile
• associated diarrhoea).
• Monitor renal
• hepatic
• and haematological parameters during prolonged therapy.
• Do not mix with calcium
• containing solutions in the same IV line.
• Keep out of reach of children.
