Indication

Pregabalin is used to treat neuropathic pain (nerve pain) caused by diabetes, shingles, or spinal cord injury. It is also used as adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).

Ingredients

• Pregabalin 75mg

Direction

Adults: Initially 75 mg twice daily or 50 mg three times daily. May be increased to 150 mg twice daily or 100 mg three times daily after 3–7 days based on response. Maximum dose: 600 mg per day. Take with or without food. Swallow whole with water.

Side effects

• Dizziness and somnolence (very common).
• Peripheral oedema (swelling of hands and feet).
• Headache.
• Weight gain.
• Dry mouth.
• Blurred or double vision.
• Ataxia (unsteady gait).
• Memory impairment or confusion.
• Mood changes
• euphoria
• or irritability.
• Constipation.
• Nausea.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to pregabalin or any excipient.
• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
• dose adjustment required.
• May cause dizziness and somnolence
• avoid driving or operating machinery until effects are known.
• Do not abruptly discontinue — taper dose gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
• Use with caution in patients with a history of substance abuse.
• May potentiate CNS depressants
• including alcohol and benzodiazepines.
• Use with caution in patients with congestive heart failure.
• Monitor for suicidal ideation and behaviour.
• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical guidance.
