Indication
Symptomatic treatment of constipation; adjunct treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.
Ingredients
- Lactulose
Direction
Adults (constipation): 15–45 mL (10–30 g) daily, adjusted to produce soft stools. Elderly: 15–30 mL daily. Children over 14 years: same as adults. Hepatic encephalopathy: 30–50 mL three times daily. May be taken undiluted or mixed with water or juice. Effect usually occurs within 24–48 hours.
Side effects
- Common: bloating
- flatulence
- abdominal discomfort (especially at start of treatment).
- At high doses: diarrhea
- nausea
- vomiting.
- Long
- term high
- dose use may cause electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia
- hypernatremia).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with galactosaemia
- or obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Use with caution in patients who are lactose intolerant (contains small amounts of lactose and galactose).
- Diabetic patients should be aware of the sugar content.
- Prolonged use should be under medical supervision.
- Consult a doctor before use in pregnancy.
- Keep out of reach of children.
