Indication
Adrenocorticoid steroid, glucocorticoid, and anti-inflammatory. Used to treat inflammatory and allergic conditions, autoimmune disorders, asthma, and other conditions requiring corticosteroid therapy.
Ingredients
- Prednisolone
Direction
Dose varies by indication. Adults: typically 5–60 mg/day in divided doses depending on condition. Children: dose calculated by weight (0.14–2 mg/kg/day). Always follow prescriber instructions. Take orally with food to reduce gastric irritation. Do not stop abruptly after prolonged use.
Side effects
- Cushing's syndrome features: weight gain
- moon face
- buffalo hump with prolonged use.
- Hyperglycaemia
- diabetes mellitus.
- Hypertension
- fluid retention.
- Osteoporosis
- bone fractures with long
- term use.
- Psychiatric effects: mood changes
- insomnia
- euphoria.
- Peptic ulceration.
- Adrenal suppression.
- Growth retardation in children.
- Increased susceptibility to infections.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections unless adequate antifungal therapy is in place.
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to prednisolone.
- Prolonged use suppresses the adrenal axis
- do not stop abruptly after long
- term therapy.
- Increases susceptibility to infections
- avoid contact with chickenpox or measles if not immune.
- Use with caution in diabetes mellitus
- hypertension
- osteoporosis
- peptic ulcer
- and psychiatric disorders.
- May mask signs of infection.
- Use with caution in pregnancy
- consult a doctor.
- Keep out of reach of children.
