Indication
Treatment of intestinal worm (helminth) infections.
Ingredients
- Albendazole
Direction
Adults and children over 2 years (over 10 kg): 400 mg as a single dose for most intestinal worm infections. For hydatid disease or neurocysticercosis: 400 mg twice daily for 28 days (with food), cycling as directed by a physician. Take with food (especially fatty food to enhance absorption).
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal: abdominal pain
- nausea
- vomiting.
- Central nervous system: headache
- dizziness.
- Elevated liver enzymes (common with prolonged use).
- Alopecia (reversible) with prolonged high
- dose therapy.
- Bone marrow suppression: leukopenia
- thrombocytopenia.
- Rare: allergic reactions
- fever.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazoles.
- Contraindicated during pregnancy and in women likely to become pregnant within one month of treatment (teratogenic in animal studies).
- Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during and for one month after treatment.
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment
- monitor liver function.
- Bone marrow suppression reported
- monitor blood counts during prolonged therapy.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Treat all household contacts simultaneously when indicated.
