Indication
Proton pump inhibitor used to reduce gastric acid. Indicated for gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, and as part of H. pylori eradication therapy.
Ingredients
- Esomeprazole 40 mg

Side effects
- Common: headache
- nausea
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain
- constipation
- flatulence.
- Less common: dizziness
- dry mouth
- peripheral edema
- elevated liver enzymes.
- Rare: hypomagnesaemia with prolonged use
- Clostridioides difficile
- associated diarrhea.
- Very rare: severe skin reactions (Stevens
- Johnson syndrome)
- hepatitis
- interstitial nephritis.
Precautions
- Not recommended in patients with hypersensitivity to esomeprazole
- other proton pump inhibitors
- or any benzimidazole.
- Exclude gastric malignancy before treatment
- esomeprazole may mask symptoms.
- Long
- term use associated with hypomagnesaemia and vitamin B12 deficiency
- periodic monitoring recommended.
- Use with caution in severe hepatic impairment
- dose reduction required.
- May reduce efficacy of clopidogrel
- avoid concomitant use where possible.
- May reduce absorption of pH
- dependent drugs (ketoconazole
- itraconazole
- atazanavir
- erlotinib).
- Keep out of reach of children.
