Indication
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers - Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - Conditions of excess stomach acid (e.g. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome) - Prevention of recurrent peptic ulcers
Ingredients
- Cimetidine 400 mg
Direction
Take orally with or after food; a common dose is 400 mg twice daily or 800 mg at bedtime as prescribed.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea
- nausea
- Headache
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- Gynaecomastia with prolonged high
- dose use
- Rarely
- confusion in the elderly or renally impaired
Precautions
- Interacts with many drugs (warfarin
- phenytoin
- theophylline) via CYP450 inhibition
- Use with caution in renal or hepatic impairment and in the elderly
- Exclude gastric malignancy before treating ulcer symptoms
- Use with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding
