Indication
Used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and to reduce the risk of stroke and cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. Also indicated for heart failure and protection of kidney function in type 2 diabetic patients with proteinuria.
Ingredients
- Losartan Potassium
Direction
Adults: Usual starting dose for hypertension is 50 mg once daily. Dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily after several weeks if needed. Take with or without food.
Side effects
- Common: dizziness
- hypotension
- hyperkalaemia.
- Common: upper respiratory tract infection
- cough (less frequent than with ACE inhibitors).
- Uncommon: anaemia
- renal impairment.
- Rare: angioedema (swelling of face
- lips
- throat — seek immediate medical attention).
- Very rare: hepatitis
- rhabdomyolysis.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to losartan or any component.
- Contraindicated in pregnancy (second and third trimesters) — can cause fetal harm or death.
- Do not use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus or renal impairment (GFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m²).
- Monitor renal function
- electrolytes (especially potassium)
- and blood pressure regularly.
- Caution in patients with renal artery stenosis
- hepatic impairment
- or heart failure.
- May cause hyperkalaemia — avoid potassium supplements or potassium
- sparing diuretics unless under medical supervision.
- Keep out of reach of children.
