AMITEC-25 25 mg

Indication

Used to treat major depressive disorder (depression). Also prescribed for neuropathic pain, prevention of migraine headaches, and nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) in children. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that works by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain.

Direction

Adults (depression): Initially 25–75 mg daily in divided doses or as a single dose at bedtime. May be increased gradually to 150–200 mg daily under medical supervision. Elderly: Start at lower doses (10–25 mg at bedtime). Do not stop abruptly — taper gradually.

Side effects

• Very common: dry mouth
• sedation
• drowsiness
• blurred vision
• constipation
• urinary retention.
• Common: dizziness
• postural hypotension
• tachycardia
• tremor
• weight gain.
• Common: confusion (particularly in elderly)
• memory impairment.
• Uncommon: cardiac arrhythmias
• QT prolongation.
• Rare: seizures
• agranulocytosis
• severe allergic reactions.
• Very rare: liver toxicity
• jaundice.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to amitriptyline or tricyclic antidepressants.
• Contraindicated in recent myocardial infarction
• arrhythmias (especially heart block)
• and mania.
• Do not use with MAO inhibitors — allow at least 14 days washout between treatments.
• Risk of suicidal ideation in children
• adolescents
• and young adults — monitor closely.
• May cause prolonged QT interval — use with caution in patients with cardiac disease.
• Causes sedation — impairs ability to drive or operate machinery.
• Anticholinergic effects: caution in urinary retention
• glaucoma
• constipation
• prostate hypertrophy.
• Use with caution in epilepsy — lowers seizure threshold.
• Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Keep out of reach of children.
