AMK 500 mg / 125 mg

Indication

Broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and dental infections caused by susceptible organisms. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes, extending the spectrum of amoxicillin.

Direction

Adults: One tablet (500 mg/125 mg) every 8 hours (every 6–8 hours for severe infections), or as directed by a physician. Take at the start of a meal to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Complete the full course of antibiotics.

Side effects

• Very common: diarrhoea
• nausea.
• Common: skin rash
• urticaria
• vomiting
• abdominal pain.
• Uncommon: Candida superinfection (thrush).
• Rare: serious hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis
• Stevens
• Johnson syndrome).
• Rare: cholestatic jaundice
• hepatitis.
• Very rare: pseudomembranous colitis.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to penicillins
• cephalosporins
• or beta
• lactam antibiotics.
• Contraindicated in patients with history of jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.
• Inform doctor of any allergy history before starting treatment.
• Risk of pseudomembranous colitis — if severe diarrhoea develops
• stop use and consult a doctor.
• Overuse may promote resistance — use only for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections.
• Reduce dose in renal impairment.
• Use with caution in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Keep out of reach of children.
