Indication
Used to stimulate appetite and as an antihistamine for the relief of allergic symptoms such as allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and pruritus. Cyproheptadine also has antiserotonin activity and is sometimes used to promote weight gain in underweight children.
Ingredients
- Cyproheptadine
Direction
Children 2–6 years: 2.5 mL (1 mg) 2–3 times daily. Children 7–14 years: 5 mL (2 mg) 2–3 times daily. Adults: 5–10 mL (2–4 mg) 3 times daily. Take with or without food. Maximum 12 mg/day for children 2–6 years, 16 mg/day for children 7–14 years.
Side effects
- Very common: sedation
- drowsiness.
- Common: dry mouth
- thickening of bronchial secretions
- dizziness
- impaired coordination.
- Common: increased appetite and weight gain.
- Uncommon: excitation
- irritability
- insomnia (paradoxical
- especially in children).
- Rare: urinary retention
- constipation.
- Very rare: haematological reactions.
Precautions
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to cyproheptadine or other antihistamines.
- Contraindicated in neonates
- premature infants
- and breastfeeding mothers.
- Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors.
- Contraindicated in acute asthma attacks
- narrow
- angle glaucoma
- peptic ulcer
- urinary retention
- and prostatic hypertrophy.
- Causes sedation — do not drive or operate machinery.
- Alcohol and CNS depressants increase sedative effects.
- Use with caution in elderly — increased risk of dizziness and falls.
- Keep out of reach of children.
