Indication
Used to relieve symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders including bloating, flatulence, intestinal spasms, and abdominal pain. Activated charcoal adsorbs intestinal gases; papaverine is an antispasmodic that relaxes smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract.
Ingredients
- Activated charcoal
- Papaverine hydrochloride
Direction
Adults: Typically 1–2 tablets 3 times daily before meals, or as directed by a physician. Swallow with water.
Side effects
- Activated charcoal: black stools
- constipation.
- Rare: nausea
- vomiting.
- Papaverine: flushing
- dizziness
- hypotension
- sweating
- headache.
- Very rare: hepatotoxicity with papaverine.
Precautions
- Activated charcoal may adsorb other oral medications — take other medicines at least 2 hours before or after Acticarbine.
- Papaverine is contraindicated in complete AV block.
- Caution in patients taking anticoagulants — papaverine may have mild anticoagulant activity.
- Not suitable as a specific antidote for poisoning without medical guidance.
- Activated charcoal may cause black stools — this is harmless.
- Keep out of reach of children.
