Indication
A proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic and duodenal ulcers, erosive oesophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Also used in combination with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication.
Ingredients
- Rabeprazole Sodium
Direction
Adults: 20 mg once daily before meals (usually in the morning) for 4–8 weeks. For H. pylori eradication: 20 mg twice daily in combination with antibiotics as per triple therapy regimen, for 7–14 days. Swallow whole — do not crush or chew.
Side effects
- Common: headache
- diarrhoea
- nausea
- abdominal pain
- flatulence
- constipation.
- Common: dry mouth
- rash.
- Uncommon: hepatitis
- elevated liver enzymes.
- Rare: hypomagnesaemia (with long
- term use).
- Rare: interstitial nephritis.
- Very rare: severe skin reactions (Stevens
- Johnson syndrome).
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to rabeprazole
- other PPIs
- or benzimidazole derivatives.
- Long
- term use may increase risk of hypomagnesaemia — monitor magnesium in prolonged therapy.
- Long
- term PPI use may be associated with reduced vitamin B12 absorption.
- Increased risk of Clostridium difficile
- associated diarrhoea with prolonged use.
- Possible increased risk of bone fracture with long
- term high
- dose use.
- Use with caution in severe hepatic impairment.
- Use with caution in patients taking clopidogrel — some PPIs may reduce antiplatelet effect.
- Keep out of reach of children.
