Indication

Used as an appetite stimulant combined with B-complex vitamins for children with poor appetite or nutritional deficiencies. Cyproheptadine stimulates appetite through antiserotonin and antihistamine activity; B-complex vitamins support energy metabolism.

Ingredients

• Cyproheptadine
• Vitamin B

Direction

Children 2–6 years: 2.5 mL (1 mg cyproheptadine) 2–3 times daily. Children 7–14 years: 5 mL (2 mg cyproheptadine) 2–3 times daily. Shake well before use. Take with or without food.

Side effects

• Common: sedation
• drowsiness.
• Common: dry mouth
• thickening of bronchial secretions.
• Common: increased appetite and weight gain.
• Uncommon: excitation
• irritability (paradoxical
• especially in children).
• Urine discolouration from B
• vitamins — harmless.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in neonates
• premature infants
• and breastfeeding mothers.
• Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors.
• Contraindicated in narrow
• angle glaucoma
• urinary retention
• peptic ulcer
• and prostatic hypertrophy.
• Cyproheptadine causes sedation — caution with CNS depressants and alcohol.
• Not recommended for use as the sole treatment of nutritional deficiency without dietary advice.
• Keep out of reach of children.
