Indication
Augmentin 228 mg/5 ml suspension (Amoxicillin 200 mg + Clavulanic acid 28.5 mg per 5 ml) is a paediatric broad-spectrum antibiotic used in children for the treatment of bacterial infections including otitis media, sinusitis, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin/soft tissue infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing organisms.

Direction
Dose is weight-based: typically 25–45 mg/kg/day of amoxicillin component, divided every 12 hours (e.g. 0.3–0.5 ml/kg/dose twice daily for 228 mg/5 ml). Reconstitute with water to the marked line and shake well. Refrigerate after reconstitution; discard after 7 days. Take with food.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea
- nausea
- vomiting — very common.
- Abdominal discomfort
- rash — common.
- Candidal overgrowth — common.
- Elevated liver enzymes — uncommon.
- Anaphylaxis — rare but serious.
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to penicillins
- cephalosporins
- or beta
- lactam antibiotics.
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions (anaphylaxis) possible.
- Use with caution in renal impairment.
- May cause Clostridioides difficile
- associated diarrhoea.
- Monitor liver function in prolonged use.
- May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
- Keep out of reach of children.
