Dexacol 5ml

Indication

Dexacol ophthalmic preparation is used for the treatment of ocular conditions requiring a corticosteroid combined with an antibiotic, such as bacterial conjunctivitis with significant inflammation, blepharitis, and post-operative eye inflammation susceptible to chloramphenicol.

Ingredients

• Dexamethasone
• Chloramphenicol

Direction

Adults: Instill 1–2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4–6 hours or as directed by a physician. In severe cases, frequency may be increased. Do not use for more than 7–10 days without medical supervision.

Side effects

• Transient burning or stinging on instillation.
• Increased intraocular pressure with prolonged use.
• Delayed wound healing.
• Secondary ocular infections.
• Rare: aplastic anaemia (associated with chloramphenicol).

Precautions

• Contraindicated in viral (herpes simplex
• vaccinia
• varicella) and fungal eye infections.
• Prolonged use may cause elevated intraocular pressure (glaucoma) and posterior subcapsular cataracts.
• Chloramphenicol carries a rare risk of aplastic anaemia
• use only for short periods.
• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to dexamethasone or chloramphenicol.
• Not for use in children under 2 years without specialist supervision.
• Remove contact lenses before instillation.
• Keep out of reach of children.
