Indication

Cimetidine injection is an H2-receptor antagonist used for the treatment and prophylaxis of peptic ulcer disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and prevention of stress ulcers in critically ill patients. It may also be used to reduce gastric acid secretion prior to surgery.

Ingredients
  • Cimetidine
Direction

Adults: 200 mg by slow intravenous or intramuscular injection every 4–6 hours. The IV dose should be diluted and administered over at least 2 minutes. Total daily dose should not normally exceed 2,400 mg. Dose adjustment required in renal impairment.

Side effects
  • Diarrhoea
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • and headache.
  • Reversible confusional states
  • particularly in elderly patients.
  • Gynaecomastia and impotence with long

  • Elevated serum creatinine (without true renal impairment).
  • Rare: bradycardia

Precautions
  • Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment — dose reduction may be required.
