Cimetidine Injection 300 mg/2 ml

Indication

Cimetidine injection is an H2-receptor antagonist used for the treatment and prophylaxis of peptic ulcer disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and prevention of stress ulcers in critically ill patients.

Direction

Adults: 300 mg by slow intravenous injection or intramuscular injection every 6–8 hours. IV dose should be diluted and administered over at least 2 minutes. Total daily dose should not normally exceed 2,400 mg. Dose adjustment required in renal impairment.

Side effects

• Diarrhoea
• nausea
• dizziness
• and headache.
• Reversible confusional states
• particularly in elderly patients.
• Gynaecomastia and impotence with long
• term use.
• Rare: bradycardia
• hypotension (with rapid IV injection)
• hepatotoxicity
• agranulocytosis.

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment — dose reduction may be required.
• Cimetidine inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes and interacts with numerous drugs (warfarin
• phenytoin
• theophylline
• lidocaine
• etc.).
• IV bolus has been associated with rare bradycardia and hypotension — inject slowly.
• Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to cimetidine or H2 antagonists.
• Keep out of reach of children.
