Indication
Cimetidine injection is an H2-receptor antagonist used for the treatment and prophylaxis of peptic ulcer disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and prevention of stress ulcers in critically ill patients.
Ingredients
- Cimetidine
Direction
Adults: 300 mg by slow intravenous injection or intramuscular injection every 6–8 hours. IV dose should be diluted and administered over at least 2 minutes. Total daily dose should not normally exceed 2,400 mg. Dose adjustment required in renal impairment.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea
- nausea
- dizziness
- and headache.
- Reversible confusional states
- particularly in elderly patients.
- Gynaecomastia and impotence with long
- term use.
- Rare: bradycardia
- hypotension (with rapid IV injection)
- hepatotoxicity
- agranulocytosis.
Precautions
- Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment — dose reduction may be required.
- Cimetidine inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes and interacts with numerous drugs (warfarin
- phenytoin
- theophylline
- lidocaine
- etc.).
- IV bolus has been associated with rare bradycardia and hypotension — inject slowly.
- Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to cimetidine or H2 antagonists.
- Keep out of reach of children.
