Indication
Cotrim P.P.M oral suspension is a sulphonamide-antibiotic combination used for the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, otitis media, and certain gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Ingredients
- sulfamethoxazole
- trimethoprim
Direction
Adults: 20 mL (800 mg sulfamethoxazole / 160 mg trimethoprim) every 12 hours for 5–14 days depending on infection. Children 6–12 years: 10 mL every 12 hours. Children 6 months–5 years: 5 mL every 12 hours.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- anorexia
- and diarrhoea.
- Skin rashes and photosensitivity.
- Haematological effects: thrombocytopenia
- leucopenia (rare).
- Stevens
- Johnson syndrome (rare but serious).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with severe sulphonamide hypersensitivity or known folate deficiency.
- Not recommended in neonates under 6 weeks due to risk of kernicterus.
- May cause severe skin reactions (Stevens
- Johnson syndrome
- toxic epidermal necrolysis) — discontinue immediately.
- Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria.
- Keep out of reach of children.
