Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate 4mg/ml

Indication

Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate injection (4 mg/mL) is a synthetic corticosteroid used parenterally for acute conditions requiring rapid anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive effect including cerebral oedema, anaphylaxis, severe allergic reactions, asthma, croup, and chemotherapy-induced emesis.

Direction

Adults: 0.5–9 mg IV or IM per dose depending on indication. Cerebral oedema: 10 mg IV followed by 4 mg IM every 6 hours. Always follow physician or institutional dosing protocols.

Side effects

• Hyperglycaemia.
• Sodium and fluid retention
• hypokalaemia.
• Hypertension.
• Increased infection susceptibility.
• Adrenal suppression.
• Gastrointestinal haemorrhage with high doses.

Precautions

• Prolonged use suppresses the HPA axis — taper gradually.
• Increases susceptibility to infections
• may mask signs of infection.
• Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections.
• Use with caution in diabetes
• hypertension
• heart failure
• and osteoporosis.
• Avoid live vaccines during treatment.
• Keep out of reach of children.
