Diabetmin Retard 850 mg

Indication

Diabetmin Retard (metformin 850 mg) is a biguanide antidiabetic used as first-line pharmacotherapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in overweight patients, when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. The retard (extended-release) formulation may improve gastrointestinal tolerability.

Direction

Adults: 850 mg once or twice daily with meals. Titrate gradually based on blood glucose response. Maximum 2,550 mg/day (3 tablets). Take with or immediately after meals.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• and abdominal discomfort (common at initiation).
• Metallic taste.
• Vitamin B12 deficiency with long
• term use.
• Rare but serious: lactic acidosis.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²) — risk of lactic acidosis.
• Suspend before iodinated contrast media and restart 48 hours after if renal function stable.
• Contraindicated in hepatic failure
• excessive alcohol use
• and conditions causing hypoxia.
• Temporarily discontinue before major surgery.
• Monitor renal function at least annually.
• Keep out of reach of children.
