Indication

Used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who are not adequately controlled on metformin alone.

Ingredients

• Empagliflozin
• Metformin Hydrochloride

Direction

Adults: Take twice daily with meals. Empagliflozin 5 mg / Metformin 500 mg per dose, twice daily. Dose may be titrated based on glycemic response. Swallow whole.

Side effects

• Common: nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• abdominal discomfort.
• Common: genital mycotic infections
• urinary tract infections.
• Uncommon: hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
• Rare: lactic acidosis.
• Rare: diabetic ketoacidosis.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m².
• Metformin: risk of lactic acidosis
• contraindicated in renal failure and hepatic impairment.
• Empagliflozin: risk of diabetic ketoacidosis and urogenital infections.
• Withhold before iodinated contrast procedures and surgery.
• Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
• Not for use in type 1 diabetes.
• Keep out of reach of children.
