Indication
Used for the treatment of chronic hyperuricemia in conditions where urate deposition has already occurred (including a history of or current gout tophus and/or gouty arthritis).
Ingredients
- Febuxostat
Direction
Adults: 40 mg once daily. If serum uric acid remains above 6 mg/dL after 2–4 weeks, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. Take with or without food.
Side effects
- Common: gout flares (especially early in treatment)
- liver enzyme elevations.
- Common: nausea
- rash.
- Uncommon: dizziness
- headache.
- Rare: serious cardiovascular events
- serious skin reactions (Stevens
- Johnson syndrome).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients currently receiving azathioprine
- mercaptopurine
- or theophylline.
- Gout flares may occur when initiating treatment
- prophylaxis with NSAIDs or colchicine is recommended.
- Cardiovascular risk: cardiovascular mortality was higher with febuxostat than allopurinol in one trial
- use with caution in patients with established cardiovascular disease.
- Monitor liver function periodically.
- Use with caution in severe renal or hepatic impairment.
- Keep out of reach of children.
