Indication
A macrolide antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), skin and soft tissue infections, ear infections, and as an alternative to penicillin in penicillin-allergic patients.
Ingredients
- Erythromycin
Direction
Adults: 250–500 mg every 6 hours, or 500 mg–1 g every 12 hours, taken on an empty stomach or with food if gastric upset occurs. Duration as directed by physician. Children: dose based on weight, as directed by physician.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- and abdominal cramps (most common).
- Diarrhoea.
- Hepatotoxicity with prolonged high doses.
- Hearing loss with high doses.
- Allergic reactions.
Precautions
- Inform physician of all medications
- erythromycin interacts with many drugs (e.g. warfarin
- statins
- theophylline).
- Use with caution in patients with liver disease.
- Can prolong QT interval
- avoid in patients with cardiac arrhythmias.
- Do not use with terfenadine
- astemizole
- or cisapride.
- Complete the full course of treatment.
