Indication

A sulfonylurea used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise.

Ingredients

• Glimepiride

Direction

Adults: initially 1–2 mg once daily with breakfast or the first main meal. Dose may be increased as directed by a physician based on blood glucose monitoring. Maximum dose typically 8 mg/day.

Side effects

• Hypoglycaemia (most important adverse effect).
• Weight gain.
• Nausea.
• Skin reactions (rash
• urticaria).
• Rarely
• liver enzyme elevations.

Precautions

• Not for use in type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Risk of hypoglycaemia
• especially with missed meals
• excessive exercise
• or alcohol.
• Contraindicated in severe renal or hepatic impairment.
• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Use with caution in elderly patients.
• May cause haemolytic anaemia in G6PD
• deficient patients.
