Indication
Propranolol is a non-selective beta-blocker used to treat hypertension, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias, essential tremor, prophylaxis of migraine, anxiety, thyrotoxicosis, and as adjunct in pheochromocytoma.
Ingredients
- Propranolol Hydrochloride
Direction
Adults: Dose varies by indication. For hypertension: 40–80 mg twice daily, increasing to 160–320 mg/day if needed. For angina: 40 mg two or three times daily. For arrhythmias: 10–40 mg three to four times daily. Take orally with or without food.
Side effects
- Bradycardia
- hypotension.
- Fatigue
- cold hands and feet.
- Sleep disturbances
- nightmares.
- Nausea
- diarrhea.
- Bronchospasm in susceptible individuals.
- Depression.
- Erectile dysfunction (rare).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in asthma
- COPD
- bradycardia
- second
- or third
- degree AV block
- cardiogenic shock
- and uncontrolled heart failure.
- Do not stop abruptly in patients with angina or ischemic heart disease — taper gradually.
- Use with caution in diabetes (may mask hypoglycemia symptoms).
- Use with caution in patients with Raynaud's phenomenon or peripheral vascular disease.
- Avoid in patients with Prinzmetal's angina.
- May cause fatigue and cold extremities.
- Interactions with calcium channel blockers
- digoxin
- and NSAIDs.
