Indication

Cefixime 100 mg tablets/capsules are a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and uncomplicated gonorrhea.

Direction

Adults and children over 12 years (>50 kg): 200–400 mg daily as a single dose or divided every 12 hours. Children 6 months–12 years: 8 mg/kg/day as a single dose or in two divided doses.

Side effects

• Diarrhea.
• Nausea
• abdominal pain.
• Skin rash or urticaria.
• Headache.
• Elevated liver enzymes.
• Rarely: pseudomembranous colitis.

Precautions

• Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
• Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy.
• Dose adjustment required in renal impairment.
• Prolonged use may cause superinfection.
• May cause false
• positive Coombs test.
