Indication

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and as part of Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens.

Direction

Adults: 20 mg once daily before a meal (typically morning) for 4–8 weeks. For maintenance or H. pylori eradication, follow the prescriber's instructions. Swallow capsule/tablet whole; do not crush or chew.

Side effects

• Headache.
• Nausea
• diarrhea
• abdominal pain.
• Flatulence
• constipation.
• Rash.
• Elevated liver enzymes (rare).
• Hypomagnesemia and increased fracture risk with long
• term use.

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment.
• Long
• term use may cause hypomagnesemia and vitamin B12 deficiency.
• May increase risk of Clostridium difficile
• associated diarrhea.
• May reduce absorption of drugs requiring gastric acidity.
• Investigate if symptoms persist despite treatment (rule out malignancy).
• Pregnancy category C.
