Indication
Metformin hydrochloride is a biguanide antidiabetic agent used as first-line therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus, both as monotherapy and in combination with other antidiabetics or insulin, to improve glycemic control.
Ingredients
- Metformin HCl
Direction
Adults: Initial dose 500 mg once or twice daily with meals. Dose may be gradually increased to 1500–2000 mg/day in divided doses. Maximum 3000 mg/day. Take orally with or immediately after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Side effects
- Nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain (common at initiation
- usually transient).
- Metallic taste.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency with long
- term use.
- Lactic acidosis (rare but serious).
- Hypoglycemia (rare when used as monotherapy).
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m²).
- Temporarily discontinue before contrast media use and after certain surgical procedures.
- Risk of lactic acidosis (rare but serious) — especially with renal or hepatic impairment
- excessive alcohol use.
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
- Monitor renal function periodically.
- Vitamin B12 absorption may decrease with long
- term use.
- Keep out of reach of children.
