Indication

Calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3) is the active form of Vitamin D. It is used to treat hypocalcemia and renal osteodystrophy in patients with chronic kidney disease, hypoparathyroidism, and pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Ingredients
  • Calcitriol
Direction

Adults: 0.25 mcg once daily. Dose may be adjusted by the physician based on serum calcium and phosphate levels. Take orally with or without food. Regular monitoring of serum calcium is mandatory.

Side effects
  • Hypercalcemia (nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • weakness
  • polyuria).
  • Headache.
  • Elevated serum creatinine.
  • Ectopic calcification with prolonged hypercalcemia.
  • Hypercalciuria.
Precautions
  • Risk of hypercalcemia — monitor serum calcium
  • phosphate
  • and creatinine regularly.
  • Avoid excessive intake of calcium supplements or calcium
  • rich foods during therapy.
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia or vitamin D toxicity.
  • Do not use with thiazide diuretics (increased risk of hypercalcemia).
  • Keep out of reach of children.
