Indication

Vitamin B12 Injection (Cyanocobalamin 1 mg/2 mL) is used for the treatment and prevention of vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anaemia, megaloblastic anaemia, and peripheral neuropathy), particularly in patients unable to absorb oral vitamin B12 due to gastric or intestinal disorders.

Direction

Adults: Administered by intramuscular injection by a healthcare professional. For initial treatment of deficiency: 1 mg (1 vial) IM every 2–3 days for 2 weeks, then 1 mg monthly for maintenance. Dose adjusted by physician based on clinical and haematological response.

Side effects
  • Injection site pain or irritation
  • Hypokalaemia (with initial treatment of severe deficiency)
  • Allergic reactions including urticaria and anaphylaxis (rare)
  • Flushing (rare)
  • Acne
  • like eruptions (rare)
Precautions
  • For injection by trained healthcare professionals only.
  • Do not use if allergic to cyanocobalamin
  • hydroxocobalamin
  • or cobalt.
  • Hypokalaemia may occur with high
  • dose treatment
  • monitor electrolytes.
  • Use with caution in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (cyanocobalamin may worsen optic neuropathy).
  • Folate deficiency should be excluded before initiating therapy for megaloblastic anaemia.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
