Mediclovir 400mg

Indication

Acyclovir 400 mg tablets are an antiviral medicine used for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV types 1 and 2), including cold sores, genital herpes, and herpes encephalitis, as well as varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox and shingles).

Direction

Adults: Treatment of genital herpes (initial episode): 200 mg five times daily for 5 days, or 400 mg three times daily for 5–10 days. Suppression of recurrent herpes: 400 mg twice daily. For chickenpox/shingles: 800 mg five times daily for 7 days. Dosage adjustments required in renal impairment. Follow physician's instructions.

Side effects

• Nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain.
• Headache.
• Dizziness
• fatigue.
• Rare: renal dysfunction with high doses or inadequate hydration.
• Rare: neurological effects (confusion
• hallucinations) in high doses.

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
• dose adjustment required.
• Ensure adequate fluid intake during treatment to prevent renal tubular crystallisation.
• Use with caution in patients with neurological abnormalities.
• Consult a physician during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• Keep out of reach of children.
