Pioglite 45 45mg

Indication

Pioglitazone 45 mg is an oral antidiabetic agent (thiazolidinedione/insulin sensitiser) used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as monotherapy (when metformin is inappropriate) or in combination with other antidiabetics including metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin.

Direction

Adults: The usual starting dose is 15–30 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum of 45 mg once daily. Take at the same time each day, with or without food. Dose titration should be guided by a physician.

Side effects

• Fluid retention and oedema.
• Weight gain.
• Hypoglycaemia (especially in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas).
• Headache
• dizziness.
• Increased fracture risk.
• Rare: hepatotoxicity.

Precautions

• Contraindicated in patients with heart failure (NYHA Class I–IV) or history of heart failure.
• Increases risk of fluid retention and oedema
• monitor closely.
• Associated with increased risk of bladder cancer with prolonged use
• do not use in patients with active bladder cancer.
• Associated with increased risk of bone fractures
• particularly in women.
• Not for use in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
• Monitor liver function tests periodically.
• Keep out of reach of children.
