Indication
Treatment of bacterial infections of the outer ear (otitis externa) and prevention of infection following otological surgery. Combines antibiotic activity (polymyxin B and neomycin) with anti-inflammatory action (dexamethasone).
Ingredients
- Polymyxin B Sulfate 10
- 000 IU
- Neomycin Sulfate 3
- 250 IU
- Dexamethasone 0.1%
Direction
Adults and children over 2 years: instil 3–4 drops into the affected ear(s) 3–4 times daily. Do not use for more than 7–10 days unless directed by a physician. Warm the bottle in your hands before use to minimise dizziness.
Side effects
- Local irritation or burning sensation
- Allergic contact dermatitis (particularly to neomycin)
- Transient hearing loss or tinnitus (rare)
- Secondary fungal infection with prolonged use
Precautions
- Contraindicated in patients with a perforated eardrum.
- Contraindicated in viral or fungal ear infections.
- Prolonged use may lead to secondary infections or emergence of resistant organisms.
- May cause sensitisation to neomycin — discontinue if allergic reaction develops.
- Avoid contact with eyes.
- Keep out of reach of children.
