Indication

Mucolytic agent for the treatment of respiratory disorders characterised by excessive or thickened mucus, including acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, mucoviscidosis, emphysema, and as an antidote for paracetamol overdose.

Ingredients

• Acetylcysteine

Direction

Adults: 200 mg three times daily or 600 mg once daily (effervescent or granule formulations). Children 2–6 years: 100 mg twice daily. Children 6–12 years: 200 mg twice daily. Dose and formulation depend on the product. Take after food. Drink plenty of fluids.

Side effects

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Stomatitis (mouth soreness)
• Rash and allergic reactions (rare)
• Bronchospasm in susceptible patients (rare)

Precautions

• Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer.
• Use with caution in patients with asthma — may rarely cause bronchospasm.
• Avoid concurrent use with antitussives (cough suppressants) — may cause mucus accumulation.
• Use with caution in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
• Do not use in children under 2 years without medical advice.
• Keep out of reach of children.
