Indication
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and conditions causing excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It reduces acid production in the stomach to relieve heartburn, acid regurgitation, and epigastric pain.
Ingredients
- Pantoprazole
Direction
Adults: 40 mg once daily, preferably in the morning before a meal. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew. For GERD and erosive esophagitis, typical treatment duration is 4–8 weeks. Dose adjustments may be required in severe hepatic impairment.
Side effects
- Headache
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Nausea and vomiting
- Flatulence and abdominal pain
- Dizziness
- Rash or itching (rare)
- Hypomagnesaemia with prolonged use (rare)
- Clostridium difficile
- associated diarrhoea (rare)
Precautions
- Not recommended for use in children under 12 years.
- Use with caution in patients with severe liver disease
- dose reduction may be needed.
- Long
- term use (>1 year) may increase risk of bone fractures
- hypomagnesaemia
- and vitamin B12 deficiency.
- May mask symptoms of gastric cancer
- exclude malignancy before initiating therapy.
- Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to pantoprazole or other PPIs.
- May interact with anticoagulants (warfarin)
- methotrexate
- clopidogrel
- and HIV protease inhibitors.
- Do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding unless directed by a doctor.
