Indication
Acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine) is a mucolytic agent used to loosen and thin mucus in the respiratory tract, making it easier to cough up. It is used to relieve symptoms associated with excessive or thick mucus in conditions such as acute and chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sinusitis, and cystic fibrosis.
Ingredients
- Acetylcysteine
Direction
Adults and adolescents over 14 years: 200 mg (1 sachet or effervescent tablet dissolved in water) 2–3 times daily. Children 6–14 years: 200 mg twice daily. Children 2–5 years: 100 mg 2–3 times daily (use appropriate formulation). Take preferably after meals. Dissolve in a glass of water and drink immediately.
Side effects
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhoea or stomach discomfort
- Headache
- Rash
- urticaria
- or itching (rare)
- Bronchospasm in predisposed patients (rare)
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to acetylcysteine.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease.
- Use with caution in patients with asthma
- bronchospasm may occur.
- Avoid concomitant use with antitussive (cough
- suppressing) medicines.
- Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Contains aspartame if applicable — caution in phenylketonuria.
- If symptoms do not improve within 5 days
- seek medical advice.
