Indication
Cefixime is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, uncomplicated gonorrhoea, pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, acute otitis media, acute bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

Direction
Adults and children over 12 years (or >50 kg): 200–400 mg per day, taken as a single daily dose or in two divided doses of 100–200 mg every 12 hours. Children under 12 years: 8 mg/kg/day in one or two divided doses. Usual treatment duration is 7–14 days depending on the infection. Take with or without food.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea (most common)
- Nausea
- vomiting
- or abdominal pain
- Headache or dizziness
- Skin rash or urticaria
- Elevated liver enzymes (rare)
- Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis (rare)
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to cefixime
- other cephalosporins
- or penicillins (cross
- sensitivity possible).
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment
- dose adjustment may be required.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease
- especially colitis.
- Pseudomembranous colitis (Clostridium difficile) has been reported with cephalosporin use.
- May interfere with direct Coombs test and urine glucose tests.
- Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
- Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
