Indication
Utrogestan contains micronised progesterone, a natural progestogen. It is used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to protect the uterine lining (endometrium) in menopausal women receiving oestrogen therapy. It is also used in infertility treatment (assisted reproductive technology) to support the luteal phase, and in cases of threatened or recurrent miscarriage due to progesterone deficiency.

Direction
Dose and schedule depend on the indication and are determined by a doctor. For HRT: typically 200 mg per day (as a single oral or vaginal dose) for 12–14 days per cycle. For luteal support: 200–400 mg daily vaginally in divided doses. Capsules may be taken orally or inserted vaginally as directed. Oral use may cause drowsiness; vaginal administration is preferred to minimise this.
Side effects
- Drowsiness and dizziness (oral route)
- Headache
- Nausea
- Breast tenderness
- Mood changes
- depression
- Vaginal discharge or irritation (vaginal route)
- Irregular vaginal bleeding
- Fatigue
Precautions
- Do not use if allergic to progesterone or peanut/soya (capsule contains peanut oil — contains arachis oil).
- Not indicated for use in pregnancy except where specifically directed by a doctor.
- Do not use in patients with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- liver disease
- history of breast cancer
- or thromboembolism.
- May cause drowsiness and dizziness when taken orally
- avoid driving and operating machinery.
- Avoid alcohol
- which potentiates sedative effects.
- Inform your doctor of all other medications
- including anticoagulants and antiepileptics.
- Not recommended for use in children.
